Baby with the Bathwater by Christopher Durang
Directed by Abigail Rice
Stage Management by Kendra Klinchuch
Starring Victoria Hogan, Jeff Koch, Sinead Phelps and Abigail Rice
Having given birth to a baked potato, or perhaps a baby, Helen and John embark on the sublime adventure of being parents—or perhaps selfish, cantankerous, barbarians, but who’s judging?
Understandably too polite to check its gender, they name it “Daisy” after the “I’m half crazy” song and sacrifice their lack-lustre for life and general dissatisfaction for that of their little girl. Despite showering her with guilt and reasonable explanations, the ungrateful child spends hours wrapped up in laundry, days lying on its back, and spontaneously darts in front of buses.
Nanny arrives in the nick of time to create a little drama and by the time Daisy goes to school, she’s no doubt forgotten any early childhood traumas, because her essays only mention the fun stuff; like ravenous dogs and the desire to die.
But then, suddenly and churlishly, Daisy decides to be a man—or always was, but that hardly matters now—and starts the selfish journey of finding his own identity.
We all do our best, but some children just come out all wrong.
